A historical gallery
ROYAL families are always intriguing because they are steeped in rich history. Hence the Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery promises to be a treat for royalty and history fans.
Located at Jalan Stesen, which is in the heart of Klang South, the gallery chronicles the life and times of the eighth Sultan of Selangor Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, who was also the 11th Yang di-Pertuan Agong. The gallery, which is walking distance from the Klang railway station, was opened by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah on Oct 19, 2007.
Housed in a national heritage building constructed in 1909 and designed by British architect Arthur Benison Hubback, it features eight halls with over 2,000 exhibits ranging from replicated royal jewellery to items collected by Sultan Salahuddin over the years.
The first hall showcases the genealogy of the Selangor royal family, which took root in 1766 from the Bugis royal family of Opu Tanreburung Daeng Relaka from Sulawesi.
The gallery’s general manager Munasor Aliyasak said there were currently plans to increase the exhibits as well as build a multi-purpose hall.
“The plan is to have the new hall to hold temporary exhibitions and events. But since the gallery is a national heritage building, we cannot attach any extension to it. Thus, we have to build the hall on its own,” he said.
Munasor said construction of the hall was still at the planning stage with the state authorities, pending Sultan Sharafuddin’s consent.
The Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery is at No.3, Jalan Stesen, Klang. Admission is free. Its opening hours are 10am to 5pm (Tuesday to Sunday). It closes on Mondays and public holidays.
