Nature’s liquid gold
EUCALYPTUS marginata, commonly known as jarrah, is a magnificently tall timber tree that can grow up to 40m.
Jarrah generally flowers every two years between December and January in the early summer.
The nectar produced has low moisture content and is collected by honeybees.
Jarrah produces a dark, thick and tasty honey with a caramel aftertaste.
It is not as sweet as other types of honey due to its low glucose and high fructose levels.
For this reason, pure Jarrah honey does not crystallise easily.
Jarrah honey has naturally occurring antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that can be measured on the Total Activity (TA) scale.
The TA rating of active honey denotes its antibacterial potency, measured by the standard (phenol) bacteria-killing scale.
Jarrah honey is considered a healing honey because it has unusually high levels of antimicrobial properties of TA 10+ or higher, thanks to its naturally occurring hydrogen peroxide activity.
Its medicinal and antimicrobial properties rival that of New Zealand’s Manuka honey.
Jarrah honey can be used internally and externally for treating wounds, burns, sunburn and skin infections because of its high antimicrobial properties.
The West Australian Jarrah Honey Committee announced that Western Australia’s unique Jarrah honey has been proven through recent research to have high antioxidant levels.
Undertaken by Dr Charles Dragar, the independent research project involved antimicrobial activity testing of honey in addition to other forms of honey testing.
Jarrah honey was found to have significantly higher levels of antioxidants than Manuka honey of New Zealand or Leatherwood honey from Tasmania, with antioxidant concentrations that are two to three times higher.
Additionally, its antimicrobial activity level can be up to 50% greater than that of Manuka honey.
Each Opceden Jarrah Honey is laboratory-tested and a certificate issued for its TA, which is as high as TA 35+.
This honey boosts immunity naturally and is free from varroa mites, harmful chemicals and preservatives.
