Employees give back to community
COMPANIES know that giving back to the community they serve is just as important as chasing success. They are also aware that having employees be part of efforts to serve the community creates a culture of giving in the organisation and awareness of corporate social responsibility (CSR).
Education, community well-being and the environment are some of the major areas that Westports Malaysia is involved in. This allows them to mould Pulau Indah into a healthy, forwardmoving community that has the capacity to reach potentials that would otherwise be unreachable.
Westports Malaysia does more than encourage its employees to be involved in CSR efforts; it recognises surrounding residents as part of its community and works to develop and move the community forward.
Westports Malaysia’s employees, fondly referred to as Westportians, fold themselves into the society of their home, bettering lives of the people who live in it.
Trust Schools Programme
Westports Malaysia has adopted two schools, SK Pulau Indah and SMK Pulau Indah, under Yayasan Amir’s Trust Schools Programme in collaboration with the Education Ministry.
The logistics giant has contributed RM5.6mil for implementation of the five-year programme.
The expertise of the Westportian engineering team enables it to improve communal spaces for everyone in Pulau Indah.
Education incentives
Over the years, Westports Malaysia has invested significant amounts of time, energy and funds to improve the standard of education for many students in Pulau Indah.
Westports Malaysia’s human resource department is dedicated to organising various activities that focus on education.
For instance, one of its key goals is to promote English language proficiency among students in Pulau Indah, including language programmes to encourage students to use English in daily conversation.
Additionally, Westports Malaysia has spearheaded campaigns that include a career exploration programme and a team-building programme.
By introducing these activities, the company is confident it can improve learning and education for students in Pulau Indah.
The campaigns were well thought out in a way that encouraged students to take part in engaging activities such as role play and public speaking.
Because of the interactive nature of these activities, both students and teachers engaged to create favourable outcomes.
Welfare of residents
Westports Malaysia’s engineering department, on the other hand, lends its skills to low-income families in Pulau Indah by repairing and refurbishing their houses. It also assists in restoring public facilities in the area.
The expertise of the Westportian engineering team enables it to improve communal spaces for everyone, which is such an important factor for any community.
Throughout the year, the team has displayed outstanding dedication in contributing to the Pulau Indah community, especially to those in dire need of better living spaces.
Earlier this year, the team assisted in refurbishing a house belonging to an 88-year-old man who has been suffering from post-stroke complications for seven years and is bedridden.
Due to his condition, his family now lacks a source of income.
The talented engineering team decided to take the refurbishment one step further by expanding the house and adding a room for the patient to meet the family’s caregiving needs.
The room is fully equipped with electrical and plumbing amenities.
Then there's the Westportian planning department, which has been instrumental in efforts to bring back to life public activity spaces within Pulau Indah, most notably the futsal and basketball court located in Kampung Perigi Nenas.
Thanks to its efforts, the popular spot for the village’s youth is more lively than ever.
Meanwhile, the Westportian finance department has been taking care of the poor and needy. It provides monthly financial contributions to a number of poor families in the community.
During festive seasons, it puts together care packages that consist of groceries and other useful items for these families.
The finance department also organises free medical check-ups for the elderly of Pulau Indah, free optical check-ups and provides prescription eyewear for students, especially those who have been orphaned.
Contributing to orang asli
Westports Malaysia has been working closely with the native community in Pulau Indah for the past 20 years through the efforts of its conventional department.
The department’s various CSR initiatives are recognised throughout the region, and Westports Malaysia is an ambassadorial figure for the promotion of education among the orang asli in Pulau Indah.
It has set up a small library for children from Perkampungan Orang Asli in Pulau Indah. Its goal is to instil reading habits in the children and help them feel comfortable using books.
Environmental champions
Westports Malaysia believes environmental protection should be the responsibility of all parties, including corporations, schools and individual members of society.
On July 23 this year, the Westportian marketing and commercial department initiated an ongoing mangrove replanting programme to help restore Pulau Indah’s coastal ecosystem.
The department collaborated with Infinity Logistics & Transport Sdn Bhd and Central Spectrum (M) Sdn Bhd under the guidance of JARING.
Through this programme, 650 mangrove seedlings were sown in addition to 3,800 trees replanted to stabilise the mangrove tree population.
