Song of the week

-

Lana Del Rey Get Free

THIS enchanting number about leaving your worries behind is a song on Lana Del Rey’s fifth studio album Lust For Life (2017).

It’s making headlines this week because Del Rey revealed via Twitter that English rock band Radiohead is attempting to file legal action against her.

Apparently Get Free bears similar chord progression to famous Radiohead single Creep, which was released in 1993. If you listen to the way Get Free goes at the beginning, it does make you think of Creep.

But Del Rey insisted that the song is not inspired by it.

“It’s true about the lawsuit. Although I know my song wasn’t inspired by Creep, Radiohead feel it was and want 100 percent of the publishing – I offered up to 40 over the last few months but they will only accept 100.

“Their lawyers have been relentless, so we will deal with it in court,” Del Rey stated in her Twitter posting.

At a concert on Jan 7, she told fans that regardless of what happens in court, the sentiment that she wrote in Get Free, which she calls her “statement song” and “personal manifesto”, remains.

“Regardless if it gets taken down off of everything, that those sentiments that I wrote, I really am going to strive for them, even if that song is not on future physical releases of the record.”

However, in a statement issued by Radiohead’s publisher Warner/ Chappell on Jan 9, there is apparently no lawsuit being filed.

“As Radiohead’s music publisher, it’s true that we’ve been in discussions since August of last year with Lana Del Rey’s representatives.

“It’s clear that the verses of Get Free use musical elements found in the verses of Creep and we’ve requested that this be acknowledged in favour of all writers of Creep.

“To set the record straight, no lawsuit has been issued and Radiohead have not said they ‘will only accept 100 percent’ of the publishing of Get Free”.

Del Rey’s side has not responded to the statement, but her fans have declared that “Radiohead is cancelled” on social media. Watch out, Thom Yorke. – Angelin Yeoh
