Talking about art
RENOWNED visual artists Calvin Chua and Chow Chin Chuan will hold a live demonstration at the Malaysian Watercolour space venue in Petaling Jaya on Feb 11.
Both the Kedah-born Chua and selangor-born Chow have been involved in the art scene since the early 1980s, developing their own distinctive styles and gradually establishing a loyal following among local and foreign collectors.
The event, organised jointly by the Malaysian Watercolour society (MWs) and Malaysian Watercolour space (MW space), will see several other well-known artists conducting an open forum on painting technique and guidance on how Malaysians can better present ideas and concepts artistically.
“The ability to express ideas vividly and capturing global attention is important,” says Miko Ng Yoon Xian, the director of MW space.
“MW space is actively advocating forums and creative art education in an open and relaxed environment.”
MWs and MW space in conjunction with the live demo will also present the second part of the Investing In Art talk series. The second part will be formatted as an informal dialogue session for local artists, financiers, business leaders and art enthusiasts to exchange ideas on how the Malaysian art industry can be better promoted and represented regionally.
After the last Investing In Art talk (2018 And Beyond: From Investing To Painting )on Feb1, Ng mentions that there were strong calls from attendees for art-related talks, education series and public engagements to raise greater awareness and garner wider public attention.
The artist community has also urged strongly for the introduction of new governmental tax breaks and other incentives to encourage local creative talents and artists, so that they can thrive and compete internationally.
“These issues brought up represent Malaysia's challenges to regain its international competitiveness in arts,” adds Ng.
The live painting demo and Investing In Art talk series takes place at the Malaysian Watercolour space, 21, Jalan ss3/39, Petaling Jaya in selangor on Feb 11. Event starts 2pm. Free admission. Info: www.malaysianwatercolourspace.com.
