A tradition worth saving

- By VISITH TEPPALATH

EVERY morning, all over Laos, people go to the temple in their village or town to give alms to the monks. Some people do it in front of their homes as monks and novices walk past.

Most festivals, ceremonies and official events in the country usually include an almsgiving ceremony because of the importance attached to the tradition. People enjoy giving alms because it’s a revered activity and a way to gain merit for themselves or for their ancestors, according to Buddhist practices.

Large almsgiving ceremonies held on special occasions always attract a large number of people, including officials and foreign tourists who want to learn about this charming ritual and witness local people participating in it.

Recently, there was a special almsgiving ceremony at Pha That Luang esplanade that was attended by thousands of residents of Vientiane, including senior officials and foreigners.

Lay people presented alms and offerings to 1,200 monks and novices invited from the nine districts of Vientiane to the event, which was held to raise money for the further renovation of the Pha That Luang Stupa and to create solidarity and friendship among participants.

Bounyang Phengsouvan, a resident of Donedeng village in Chanthabouly district, who took part in the event, said he felt very happy to be part of the special occasion.

“I like almsgiving and I’m very happy to be here today. It’s very good to organise these events and thousands of people have come here to give food and other offerings to the monks and novices,” he said.

“Almsgiving is a good way to preserve our religion and traditions. This tradition has been practised since ancient times, since the time of Lord Buddha. It’s not only about offering things to monks – almsgiving teaches us to share with other people.

“Lao people should continue this fine tradition. If we don’t practise it, the younger generation many not know how to do it correctly and may not even continue it. So we should set an example now for them to follow.

“In addition, organising this special event is a good activity for our society as it unites people to do something good together.”
