MARCH 23 to APRIL 15: The Art Gallery Penang presents Khoo Cheang Jin’s 11th solo exhibition. There will be 26 paintings, with 22 paintings of old-school Penang kopitiam, on display. Other than the traditiona­l heritage shophouse setting, Khoo has also included the Taman Free School hawker stalls, the coffee stall at the side of the Campbell Street Market, and the Air Itam kopitiam. The opening ceremony and tea reception will be held on Sunday, from 12.30pm to 5pm. Exhibition hours: 2pm-5pm (Friday to Sunday). Other days, by appointmen­t only.

SUNDAY and MARCH 31: Neymar Jr’s Five is back in Malaysia for the third season running, to find the next football team to compete in Brazil. With over 60 countries and 100,000 players taking part in the biggest amateur football competitio­n in the world, Neymar Jr’s Five provides a platform for Malaysian talents to shine at the world arena. There are two remaining qualifiers. They are categorise­d into open and university categories. The best 16 teams from the qualifiers will compete in the National Finals at Sunway University, Selangor, on April 14. The champions will go on to represent Malaysia in Brazil for Neymar Jr’s Five 2018 from July 18-21. This Sunday’s qualifiers are only for university students with valid Student IDs. It will be held at Universiti Putra Malaysia, Serdang, Selangor. On March 31, the open qualifiers will be held at Sports Planet Ampang. Registrati­on fee: RM150 per team. Time: 8am (both days).

MARCH 28: Technologi­cal innovation has dramatical­ly reduced the cost of genome sequencing, making it affordable to sequence DNA from people, cancers and pathogens. To share more on the topic is Professor Patrick Maxwell, the Regius Professor of Physics, and Head of the School of Clinical Medicine at Cambridge University. Prof Maxwell has been centrally involved in a series of discoverie­s which have revealed how changes in oxygenatio­n are sensed, and how genetic alteration­s can cause kidney disease. Fans can look forward to his rendition of songs such as Hothon Se Cholo Tum, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Tumko Dekha and Jhuki Jhuki Si Nazar. The show is Shekhar’s tribute to his mentor and long-time friend, the late “Ghazal king” Jagjit Singh, an Indian Ghazal singer, composer and musician who passed away in 2011.
