IACT College offers one of the best broadcasting and filmmaking course in Malaysia.

Combining both theory and practical handling of equipment and film projects, broadcasting students of IACT College have been producing award-winning films and commercials for both international and local brands like Gatsby, Berjaya, Sunway Lagoon, MHTC, NCSM and MyKris in the last five years.

Film-maker and lecturer Lor Yew Mien, popularly known on social media as Mien.LY, was a finalist in The BMW Shorties 2017 with her short film and recently produced a mini-documentary for Mah Sing Group.

She shared her insights on the question frequently asked by parents and students: What does it take to be successful in broadcasting?

“Before addressing that, there are two simple questions you need to answer.”

“First is, ‘Do you to want make videos of yourself in the hope of attaining fame and fortune?’, or ‘Do you want to make tell messages and stories in the hope of affecting people?” she asked.

Those who answer “yes” to the first question and are motivated to become a social media influencer were advised to explore studying performing arts instead.

“I believe that videos for such purposes are more about the performance of the ‘influencer’ rather than the ability to craft stories through the video format.”

Those who answered “yes” to her second question would need more than just basic video production skills.

“For example, they should learn how broadcasting of television and radio works, and all the key components involved in the process.

“They should keep up with developments in the communication technology and learn about the latest online trends in video publishing.

“Most importantly, take up courses that enhance creative and critical thinking,” Lor said.

Lor shared her personal discussion with peers from the media industry and found that most communication graduates fail to grasp concepts and issues despite having the production skills,

This led to dull and shallow content clothed in glossy delivery style.

“With this in mind, you should strive to ensure the degree programme you pick includes a generous amount of media and cultural theoretical courses, which can widen your understanding of societies and the relationship between media and culture.”

“The should sharpen your capacity to be critical and consequently, be more creative in the communication of the messages and stories,” she said.

Lor lectures in IACT College, under the BA (Hons) Media, Culture and Communication programme (3+0 UK Programme), specifically in broadcasting and filmmaking.

IACT College offers degree, diploma, and foundation programmes in film, broadcasting, advertising, marketing, mass communication, graphic design and media studies.
