Raising the bar to extraordinary heights
HERIOT-WATT University was established in 1821 and is the eighth oldest higher education institution in the UK.
Since its inception, the university has expanded its reach with a total of five campuses across the globe.
As the International University of the Year, awarded by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018, the university challenges itself to truly impact the lives of its students by equipping them with the best education it can offer.
“The thing I enjoy the most is the way our classes are conducted. The practical sessions have allowed me to anticipate the real-world experience of working in this field. This is very important to me as occasionally the knowledge learned in books may not be comprehensive enough for us to fully understand certain concepts. Thus, practical learning helps in improving our understanding and applying the theory we have learned in class to the field,” said Lew Kai Shen.
Lew is a first-year student currently pursuing a degree in BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.
He and Bernard Wong Pin Hoong are part of Heriot-Watt’s School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society, which offers distinct yet complementary disciplines in architectural engineering, biology, civil engineering, construction management and surveying, and urban studies.
“Heriot-Watt University Malaysia offers internationally recognised programmes both locally in Malaysia and abroad as students get the opportunity to complete their degree in Edinburgh. The quality of academics, the accreditation of the programme by professional bodies and the world-class learning experience makes it even more appealing as my university of choice,” said Wong, a third-year student in BSc (Hons) Construction Project Management.
When asked how prepared he felt for his career ahead, he said: “The courses here are geared towards the integration of technology in construction project management, which is what the industry needs, especially in Malaysia. I believe my degree has prepared me well by providing me with an opportunity to widen my career prospects as well as job horizons beyond the country.”
Wong was recognised as Heriot-Watt University Malaysia’s outstanding student candidate with the highest average grade score within the CPM/ QS discipline during his Year 1 2015/2016 and Year 2 2016/2017, making him the best performing student across all campuses in Malaysia, Dubai and the UK.
He was awarded “The University Prize”, an award for outstanding merit with a £100 (RM546.60) cash prize.
Heriot-Watt offers a myriad of programmes at foundation and undergraduate levels, which not only equip students to face the challenges of the ever-changing world but also provide a platform to launch them towards achieving their ambitions and beyond.
