Six FiS students bag scholarships
ONE of the goals of many aspiring students is to be successful in their education.
When they perform beyond their expectations, it not only brings happiness to themselves and their loved ones but it motivates them to do better – academically and in life.
However, many are worried that the increasing costs may affect their education.
Thus, securing a scholarship reduces the financial burden and allows one to achieve his or her dreams.
In 2017, six high-achieving Foundation in Science (FiS) students won the International Medical University (IMU) scholarships to pursue an undergraduate degree in Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS); BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Chemistry; BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science; BSc (Hons) Chiropractic and BSc (Hons) Dietetics with Nutrition.
The scholarships, in the form of full or partial tuition fee waivers, are for students who demonstrate outstanding academic excellence, extracurricular participation and leadership qualities.
Let’s hear what some of the recipients have to say.
Yeap Zhi Xuan, who is pursuing Dietetics with Nutrition, appreciates the support she received from her academic mentor, Jessica Leong, throughout her foundation programme.
Not only did Leong advise her on academic matters, she had also been supportive in other ways as well.
Yeap also stressed that the Cross Boundary Studies and Product briefing assignment had improved her self-confidence and presentation skills as these group-based modules encouraged students to work in teams.
Sri Darsheny Sri Krishna received the Biomedical Science Scholarship.
Although she was aware of the scholarship, her first semester results were not good as she was still adapting to the FiS system and university life. However, she did not give up. Sri made sure that her results improved in the second and third semesters.
She also read a lot of journals and articles on biomedical science. In fact, the interviewers were impressed when she shared one of her readings with them.
FiS is a one-year pre-university programme that prepares students for a variety of undergraduate degrees at IMU (local degrees and credit transfer options).
IMU’s FiS has three intakes a year – April, July and September.
These start dates enable a smooth transition into students’ preferred degree courses.
