Producing well-rounded graduates
WHEN Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman’s (Utar) Faculty of Science (FSc) held its first FSc Postgraduate Seminar in November 2017, 102 participants benefited from the research presented by academics such as the Department of Biological Science’s Dr Yap Moh Lan and the Department of Agricultural and Food Science’s Dr Kuan Chee Hao.
Eight Master of Science students and one Doctor of Philosophy (Science) student also presented papers at the seminar.
Postgraduate students had the opportunity to present their scholarly works, encouraging interactions between the presenters and participants.
The seminar also promoted mutual learning opportunities by enabling them to enrich their existing knowledge and develop presentation skills.
FSc dean Assoc Prof Dr Lim Tuck Meng said, “In order to make the world a better place to live in, we need to have the relevant knowledge. The correct manipulation of this knowledge can benefit us all.
“Following this maxim, the faculty aspires to be a centre of knowledge acquisition and train ing for those who are interested in the field of science.”
The research presented saw prospects for effective vaccine development against infectious viral diseases and medicine production from aquatic plants.
As a university committed to lifelong learning, Utar believes that students are capable of shaping the future of science.
Utar graduates enjoy a 97% graduate employability rate within six months of graduation. They can work in engineering, education, healthcare and psychology, conservation, human resources, translation and development, as well as in the academic field as researchers or lecturers.
FSc carries out monitoring and thesis examination systems to produce competent graduates. Currently, it offers the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy (Science).
Under the Master of Science programme, students are nurtured to be seasoned researchers and experts in specialised areas.
They are encouraged to be innovative and creative in problemsolving, spurring research development in Malaysia.
The Doctor of Philosophy (Science) programme aims to produce graduates who can respond to abstract problems that will expand on existing procedural knowledge.
They will get to lead and originate complex social processes as they engage in critical dialogue sessions with peers.
Utar has been one of the fastest growing private higher education institutions in the country since its inception in 2002.
Utar’s Open Day will be held on Apr 7, 8, 21 and 22 at the Sungai Long, Bandar Sungai Long campus and Kampar, Perak campus. Utar also has extended counselling hours at both campuses daily, from 9am to 5pm (except for public holidays).
