ANTENATAL care is one of the fundamental parts of pregnancy and should start the moment a woman discovers she is expecting.

It will give her and the partner the opportunity to ask questions they do not always remember at the regular pregnancy follow-ups.

But when is the best time to go for an antenatal class?

Chief nursing officer at KPJ Selangor Specialist Hospital Sumaria Abd Moin said that antenatal classes are an addition to antenatal care and recommended for all expecting mothers, who are having a natural delivery, a caesarean or even a second baby.

She said while the classes are not compulsory for a pregnancy, women may find them beneficial, especially if it is their first pregnancy.

“You cannot predict or control what will happen in the future but this is one opportunity to prepare yourself as best possible – being prepared is key,” said Sumaria.

The best time to start attending antenatal classes is ideally between 22 and 26 weeks, when there is still ample time to put together important decisions.

There are five good reasons to attend an antenatal class:

> Expertise – antenatal class speakers are experienced specialist consultants, nurses and midwives who specialise in maternity education because they passionately believe in it.

> Knowledge – expecting parents will learn all delivery options available, with the pros and cons of each.

They also will get information on the journey before, during and after delivery.

> Tools – hands-on practical tips will be taught such as breathing technique, breastfeeding technique, how to exercise during pregnancy, as well as baby massage and baby bathing.

All these can help the mother have an easier delivery.

> Confidence – expecting parents will become more positive and confident knowing what to expect and how to manage any situation that may occur during and after delivery.

> Be well prepared – expecting parents will be taught all aspects of pregnancy and delivery, from stretch marks to caring for your newborn.

The benefits of antenatal care are manifold, as proper antenatal care can prevent complications.

With awareness and proper diagnosis, complications like diabetes and hypertension can be properly monitored and treated.

Antenatal classes will highlight the importance of proper nutrition during pregnancy as well as breastfeeding to expecting mothers.

The classes will also greatly facilitate expecting parents to gain fact-based information on pregnancy, delivery options, breastfeeding as well as caring for the newborn baby so that they can make informed choices.

These classes also provide partners an understanding on the whole process of pregnancy, delivery and early parenting.
