Lessons that last a lifetime
SEVEN years after graduating from Nilai University (Nilai U), Olivia Ling Voon Fui still has fond memories of her time there studying for a diploma in nursing.
It was a time of significant life lessons, character building and learning to venture beyond her comfort zone.
Ling says she used to lack confidence around strangers and needed encouragement before warming up to others.
“Nilai U brought out the best in me,” said Ling, who began her studies at the university in January 2008.
“Nilai U’s committee taught me how to become a leader and the seniors were friendly, guiding me till I bloomed into a new person.
“It was a huge accomplishment for a shy person like me.”
Ling graduated in 2010 and currently works as a nurse manager in the operation theatre of Cengild GI Medical Centre, Bangsar in Kuala Lumpur.
“I feel like I had made the best choice when I picked Nilai U to pursue my Diploma,” said Ling.
“Besides the academic experiences, I discovered new skills when I was chosen to be one of the nursing group representatives in 2010.”
“To me, Nilai U is a diverse university where local and international students enjoy equal opportunities. Nilai U also has various faculties such as health science, hospitality and engineering.”
She adds that the international students gave her the opportunity to learn about other cultures and traditions.
Another influencing factor behind Ling’s decision to choose Nilai U was the campus environment, which is similar to her hometown of Miri in Sarawak.
“The campus has a lot of greenery and I was always close to nature,” she said. “This gave me peace of mind, which helped with my studies.”
Having built a career of her own, Ling says the main reason she chose Nilai U was because of its acclaimed nursing programme.
“As a nurse, it is very important for me to be well versed in the theories and practices of nursing skills,” she explained.
“I achieved this at Nilai U through my knowledgeable, helpful and friendly lecturers, who guided me throughout my academic years.
“I will always recommend Nilai U to my friends and families as it not only has the best academic programmes, but also offers co-curriculum activities that enable students to have a true university experience.”
Ling added that she is proud to be a Nilai U graduate and that her years in the university have helped her make sound decisions for her future.
“With all the skills learnt and knowledge gained from Nilai U, I am confident that I will be able to spread my wings and reach international shores one day.”
