Ready Player One

-

(★★★★✩)

IN the stimulating cinematic VR-centred world of Ready Player One, there is never a dull moment. The spectacular action, wonder and intrigue of this sci-fi film radiate with intense pulse-pounding, heart-racing and explosive delivery.

Director Steven Spielberg puts in an admirable effort, displaying spellbinding dystopian and futuristic visuals while paying homage to iconic multimedia and pop culture allusions (and Easter eggs).

The film does well in depicting integral themes such as reality, the unhealthy obsession with technology and virtual escapism, and rebellion against corporate greed.

Based on Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel, it does well to highlight society-centred messages, such as the dangers of interaction via avatar. Through it all, it creates an appreciation for cherishing the realities we find ourselves in by making time for wholesome moments, astutely allowing for the occasional loss of ourselves in exciting technology and virtual realms.

Sure, important plot points do pass a tad too quickly, certain characters could have been better developed, and some references may be lost on those unfamiliar; yet this Willy Wonka-esque story comes through relatively intact with the right amount of exposition.

Combine this with decent acting, excellent visuals, wholesome messages, a high-octane treasure-hunt plot and a touch of nerdy nostalgia, and you virtually get a thoroughly entertaining film everyone can enjoy. – Edmund Evanson
