Choice of campuses for med students

-

MANAGEMENT and Science University (MSU) places a strong focus on the critical areas of studies that encompass medicine, health sciences, pharmacy, information sciences and engineering, business management and professional studies, education and social sciences, hospitality and culinary, as well as music and fashion.

As a global university of choice, MSU’s involvement in the areas of medical education is an initiative towards complimenting the nation’s need for qualified medical personnel in Malaysia and the region.

The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is a five-year programme offered through the International Medical School (IMS) at the MSU main campus in Shah Alam and its off-shore campus in Bangalore, India – Malaysia’s first medical school to receive a five-year accreditation from the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC).

In addition, MSU’s MBBS programme is recognised by the Sri Lanka Medical Council and the Maldives Medical and Dental Council.

MSU’s MBBS curriculum is designed in adherence to the guidelines and approval by MMC. The MBBS programme presents a continually expanding level of medical experiences.

In the early years of study, the basic medical sciences are taught in the context relevant to patient care.

Later in the course, clinical teaching builds upon and reinforces this strong scientific foundation.

MSU has developed a five-year medical course featuring three phases of study through IMS.

Both phases I and II are delivered through system-based modules while phase III is conducted through disciplinebased postings, which include medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatric, psychiatry, primary care, orthopaedics, emergency medicine and short postings.

In comparison to many medical schools in Malaysia, one of the key features of MSU’s MBBS programme is the emphasis on clinical communication skills and early clinical contact visit to medical practices, community care facilities and hospitals.

MSU focuses on developing qualified medical doctors who not only excel academically but also portray commendable soft skills through involvement in various community services.

This is to ensure a continuous effort by MSU towards the nations’ objectives in health care and services.

MSU medical students will also have the opportunity to complete their clinical training at two major referral hospitals in Malaysia, namely the Sungai Buloh Hospital and the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang.

In addition, with the completion of the MSU Medical Centre, MSU will be the first private university to own a teaching hospital to provide clinical training to its students.

Upon completion, a student has to register with the Public Service Department and complete a twoyear housemanship programme at selected public hospitals under the supervision of the Malaysian Health Ministry.

Intakes for the MBBS programme are in April and September.

Qualified students are required to sit for the Medical Entry Test at the MSU campus in Shah Alam to determine their aptitude for the MBBS programme.
