Memories of Bario

SHEELA Chandran’s article entitled “Woman At The Wheel” (March 23; available online at tinyurl.com/star2bario) made me nostalgic for the days when I was posted to Labuan, off the coast of Sabah, as a young Royal Malaysian Air Force officer in the 1960s.

My first flight to Bario from Labuan in the Twin Pioneer aircraft was on Oct 9, 1967. For your info, that very aircraft was on display at the National Museum a few years ago.

On Oct 10, we picked up a Sabah Border Scout personnel by the name of Roland from Lutong and dropped him off at Bario after landing at Long Semado. I met the same gentleman briefly at Bario Airport a couple of years ago and he is now the owner of a hotel situated not far from the old airport.

I remember the old Bario with the army camp on top of a hill behind the old airport, and how happy the soldiers always were to see us taxiing in to the airport’s apron with their rations and mail.

Occasionally, the air force organised books and toys for children that were flown to Bario as part of its heart and minds project.

Sheela’s article has tempted my wife and me to take the logging route from Bario to Miri!

Truly incomparable

THANK you for your article on Tan Sri P. Ramlee on April 3 (“A Cut Above”; available online at tinyurl.com/ star2-ramlee). It was wonderful, and it really took me down memory lane.

I remember watching his movies with our parents. He was excellent as an actor in Ibu Mertuaku (1962) especially (he also directed that movie) – and what a comedian! We had a collection of his songs, too. Somehow, his movies and music could attract all races at that time.

It’s very sad that he did not get the recognition he deserved while he was alive. The man was truly incomparable.

Much needed inspiration

HEY there! Just wanted to drop a quick note to thank you for the brilliant article, “From Tolstoy To Gandhi And King” (Human Writes, April 8; available online at tinyurl.com/star2-gandhi).

We could very much use more of these inspirational examples to hold ourselves to higher standards and strive for a greater quality of life here in Malaysia. What a gem of an article amidst other mainstream, shall I say, slightly more depressing articles!

Thank you for inspiring me, and keep up the good work.
