Shining star in Islamic Finance
MANAGEMENT and Science University (MSU) alumnus Muhammad Uzair Zulkifly is thankful for the fruitful experience he received from his time at the university.
“I strongly encourage all MSU students to partake in activities offered on-campus or off-campus to gain experience. These unlimited opportunities will not only provide unprecedented exposure but will also catapult one’s career,” he said.
An Islamic economic enthusiast, Muhammad Uzair started his higher education in MSU under the Foundation in Business programme. MSU was actually a stepping stone in his academic career.
After gaining experience by engaging in the activities offered at MSU, he continued his bachelor’s degree in International Economics and Trade in Coventry University, UK, under an MSU scholarship.
During his time at Coventry University, he was in the Islamic Society committee.
The most vital experience gained was the on-hand experience in disseminating information on Islam in the community where Islamic values are not the hegemony of system.
He also joined the exclusive Global Leaders Programme (GLP), which has raised global awareness from working with people across the globe and exploring a wide variety of cultures through interactive activities including advanced workshops, global networking and exposure to inspirational industry leaders.
Consequently, he pursued his master’s by taking up the MSc in Islamic Finance at Durham University. There, he studied the wider concept of Islamic banking and finance through the lens of moral economy with prominent figures in Islamic economics, Prof Mehmet Asutay and Prof Habib Ahmed. He graduated with distinction and was also awarded Best Dissertation from Islamic Finance Faculty in Durham Business School.
His biggest inspiration is Prophet Muhammad. He also adores Karl Polanyi whose magnum opus, The Great Transformation accentuates that double movement is needed in countering cultural hegemony.
From the Islamic Economic perspective, Uzair believes that double movement is required to relocate society to the market. This is essential for a society to achieve the pinnacle of socio-economic status (maqasid al-shariah).
At the moment, Muhammad Uzair is plying his trade at a Shariah advisory company based in Kuala Lumpur.
Prior to joining his current company, he joined the Islamic Banking and Finance Institute of Malaysia (IBFIM) as part of the Shariah team in advising from the Shariah spectrum numbers of unit trust and asset management of both local and international organisations.
MSU offers programmes of study at postgraduate, undergraduate and foundation levels through connected pathways that admit students from all walks of life and backgrounds.
The university delivers compelling learning experiences within the framework of a holistic curriculum.
Its global mobility initiatives for student exchange, leadership development and market immersion empower MSU graduates with the well-roundedness that is sought after by employers.
