Striking a positive note
Diego Maradona and Pelé kick off Hublot World Cup 2018 campaign.
FOR the 2018 FIFA World Cup, held June 14 to July 15 in Russia, watch brand Hublot has signed up some of the world’s biggest sporting personalities to bring a powerful positive message to fans. Soccer legends Diego Maradona and Pelé kick off this campaign themed on sport and solidarity, called “How to become a champion!”
With less than a month to go until the 2018 World Cup sees the best national soccer teams go head-to-head in Russia, Hublot – the event’s official timekeeper – is rolling out a new campaign with a universal message for all wannabe champions. The watch brand has signed up 13 sporting legends: Pelé, Diego Maradona, Usain Bolt, David Trezeguet, Marcel Desailly, Alexeï Smertine and Xherdan Shaqiri, plus coaches José Mourinho, Stanislav Cherchesov, Gareth Southgate, Julen Lopetegui, Hervé Renard and Didier Deschamps, and the international referee Björn Kuipers.
Each sports personality has been asked to give their tips on how to become a champion. To kick off the campaign, Pelé said: “To become a champion, respect others and never think that you’re the best!” Diego Maradona said: “To become a champion, you must never give up or stop practicing. The most important thing: respect your parents, as they are your best advisors.”
The two former soccer stars appear in a series of campaign photos, alongside their quotes and various emblems of the 2018 soccer World Cup, such as a giant Matriochka and a Hublot soccer ball, created by the artist Andrey Bartenev.
A smartwatch for supporters
Hublot also has a limited-edition watch dedicated to the World Cup. The “Big Bang Referee 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia” is a smartwatch featuring a series of “fan” dials in the colors of each participating nation, as well as a host of functions for soccer fans.
For example, the “Big Bang Referee 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia” alerts the wearer 15 minutes before matches kick off, as well as to yellow and red cards, player changes and goals. The watch also vibrates, displaying the word “GOAL” instantly every time a goal is scored. During the match, the dial shows match statistics including the score, red and yellow cards, the names of goal-scorers, player substitutions and match time.
