Engineering a change

-

CIVIL engineering is a branch of knowledge that deals with the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of structure and infrastructures for the benefit of mankind.

It is one of the oldest engineering disciplines and, therefore, one of the most popular.

> How do I start?

If you are a school-leaver who has just completed your SPM, O-Levels or equivalent qualification, you can opt for the Foundation in Science or Diploma in Civil Engineering.

For those who have STPM, A-Levels or equivalent qualification, you can start your Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Hons).

> Is this programme for me?

If you are a determined, energetic and ambitious person who is willing to take on challenges and are passionate about creating, innovating and improving, engineering is the right choice for you. If you like to create wealth, contribute to society and make life better, engineering is the right profession for you.

> What will I learn?

You will learn interesting things about what you see around you. For example, you will study the characteristics of concrete, soil, water, rainfall, traffic, environment and more.

You will then explore the design process either manually or using software tools and learn how to design a project from start to finish.

> What should I expect?

Civil engineering is a challenging yet rewarding profession that aims to build and maintain the physical infrastructure of our society for the benefit of humanity.

The majority of the infrastructure that surrounds us is the work of a civil engineer.

At Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur (IUKL), students develop the technical knowledge, communication skills and the ability to operate as a future civil engineer.

> What will I do?

Civil engineers design and build bridges, roads, railways and tunnels, as well as tall structures and large buildings such as multistorey car parks, train stations, ports and stadiums.

Once completed, civil engineers are involved in the operation and maintenance of these structures.

> Who will employ me?

Once you graduate, you can register with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (only for local graduates) to be recognised as a graduate engineer.

You can then work as an engineer with consultants, contractors, developers, planning and scheduling firms and government agency/authority.

The job could be related to towers, bridges, roads, railways and tunnels; airports and mines; dams, ports and harbours; water supplies and sewerage schemes; irrigation systems and flood mitigation work.

> Are there any professional recognition?

The degree programme is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Council, a delegated body by the Board of Engineers Malaysia.

It is the only recognised accrediting body for engineering degree programmes offered in Malaysia.

The degree programme is also internationally recognised under the Washington Accord, a multinational agreement that recognises the substantial equivalency of engineering degree programmes accredited by the responsible bodies in each of the current signatory countries.
