Singing their way to China
Three teenagers have won the honour of representing Malaysia on Sing! China Season Three.
Three Malaysians will be representing the country in popular reality show Sing! China Season Three, which is set to begin in July.
The top three spots at the recent Sing! China 2018 Malaysia auditions went to Danson Ooi Tiek Sing (champion),
Wan Adlyn Maasyah Mohd Shah (first runner-up) and Jonathan Chee Yan hao (second runner-up).
The trio – all aged 18 – emerged triumphant after four rounds of auditions that saw more than a thousand applicants.
A total of 22 contestants qualified for the semi-finals, which was then whittled down to 10 for the finals.
Both the semis and finals were held on May 19 at the Mega Star Arena in Kuala Lumpur.
The finals pit a celebrity team against the team of contestants in a series of head-to-head (known as PK, or Player Kill) matches.
The celebrity team was led by local singer Michiyo ho, and comprised Malaysian stars such as Namewee, ribbon Ooi, Daniel Chezi, Danny One, emily Kong, Daphne Charice, Ke Qing, Kate Chan, ruby Yap and Ding Ding.
Singer-songwriters Abin Fang and Bell Yu Tian served as guest performers and judges along with radio personality Wayne Thong, actor William San, as well as music producer Billy Ong.
The organisers also invited Guizhou-born Zhang hengyuan, the first runner-up from The Voice Of China Season Two (2013), and Penang-born Janice Tan from the Jay Chou Team of Sing! China Season Two (2017) as guest artistes.
The five-hour-long show was hosted by local radio personality hana Teo.
The top three winners will represent Malaysia in Sing! China Season Three which is set to air on China’s Zhejiang Television in July.
Judges for Sing! China Season Three, include Taiwan’s Jay Chou and harlem Yu, hong Kong’s Nicholas Tse and China’s Li Jian.
Penangite Jeryl Lee was the only Malaysian who made it to Sing! China Season One (2016), which was won by Wang Feng Team’s Xinjiang folk singer Jiang Dunhao.
The following year, in Season Two, Janice Tan, Jeslyn Khoo, Jeffrey Chen represented Malaysia. Tibetan folk singer Tashi Phuntsok was crowned champion.
