Short and sweet

THE BookFest@Malaysia writing workshop has been getting lots of enthusiastic response from members of the public, with online bookings and queries flooding in. With a focus on short stories, this year’s event is capped to 80 participants to allow for more interaction between speakers and the audience.

If you’re at all interested in getting into writing fiction, this would be the perfect workshop to sign up for, as you will be learning from established writers.

Here are the people you will be spending June 10 and 11 with: Sharon Bakar, a creative writing teacher, editor and publisher; Kris Williamson, a publishing consultant, editor and author; Bernice Chauly, an award-winning novelist and poet; and Tunku Halim, a bestselling novelist and short story writer.

The workshop, held in conjunction with BookFest@Malaysia, is organised by Popular Book Co (M) Sdn Bhd as a part of its “Popular Supports Local Authors” initiative.

Day One (June 10): Join Bakar in her session on what a short story is and the pitfalls you should look out for. What rules do you have to keep in mind, and what makes your story publishable?

Next, Williamson shows how to get inspired, how to keep the flow going and how to stay on track.

Day Two (June 11): Chauly will guide you on how to find your voice.

How will your characters fit your story’s theme and plot? What kind of journey do you want to take your reader on?

The workshop will end with Tunku Halim’s sessions on creating realistic settings and dialogue to draw the reader into your world. He will also cover the process of rewriting and self-editing.

Writing Workshop: Short Stories will take place from 10am to 5pm on June 10 and 11 at Hall 5, Hospitality Lounge 5, of BookFest@ Malaysia at the KLCC.

Participants must be at least 16 years old and have a passion for writing.

Registration is RM80 and includes an entry ticket to BookFest@Malaysia and exclusive notes from the speakers.

Tickets can be purchased at selected Popular outlets; visit bit.ly/ bfmww18 for the list of outlets.

AUSTRIAN artist Erwin Wurm is bringing his mobile artwork “Hot Dog Bus” to New York this summer, with plans to drive around the Brooklyn waterfront serving up actual hot dogs to passersby.

The artist modified a vintage Volkswagen Minibus to create the surreal, mobile artwork, which invites public participation in the form of a bright-yellow, overstuffed food truck.

The Hot Dog Bus is in fact the US premiere of Wurm’s artwork Curry Bus, which he debuted in Germany in 2015, serving currywurst outside the Museum of Wolfsburg. This reimagined iteration is intended to highlight the gastronomic connection between New York’s iconic street food and his homeland of Austria.

Wurm will unveil the Hot Dog Bus (http://tiny.cc/hotdogbus) at Brooklyn Bridge Park on June 9. Through Aug 26, find it at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 1 on Saturdays and Pier 5 on Sundays from 12-6pm.

Wurm’s exhibition is being presented by the Public Art Fund,
