Staying power

As observed at London Fashion Week Men’s, streetwear and sportswear remain undefeated for Spring/Summer 2019.

LONDON menswear week concluded last week, after showcasing some of the trends in store for the Spring/Summer 2019 season.

While inspirations and references from the major labels were diverse, often expressing various causes and commitments, men’s ready-to-wear will still have a decidedly streetwear flavour next season.

Anyone who thought that the streetwear, or even athleisure, trends would lose steam next year looks set to be disappointed. The first menswear shows of the season, held in London from June 9 to 11, suggest that menswear wardrobes will still be influenced by urban styles in the coming seasons.

In the British capital, designers proved that streetwear could be teamed with many diverse inspirations. Whether retro, political, rock, super stylish or with military details, streetwear was still riding high on the London runways as a key trend for Spring/Summer next year.

Designer Liam Hodges showed several silhouettes directly inspired by the streetwear world, notably with a wealth of sporty references, including casual shorts, slogan sweaters, beach slides and, of course, sneakers.

Such details were also found in the Christopher Raeburn collection. At Oliver Spencer, the trend was subtler, channeled through a laid-back attitude and numerous accessories, including sports-style bags. Xander Zhou, who undoubtedly wins the prize for originality, managed to bring chic, casual, eccentric and futuristic themes to materials and cuts directly inspired by streetwear styles.

The collection notably featured a toweling sweatsuit, slimline bermuda shorts, sneakers and a sporty waist pack.

What We Wear launched headlong into the world of sport with a collection largely themed on soccer, with jerseys and sweatsuits totally revisited in looks for men and women.

Finally, sneakers worn with long socks looks like another budding trend for Spring/Summer 2019. – AFP Relaxnews
