Promoting a healthier lifestyle
THE Healthy Lifestyle Campaign organised by the Nursing Department of Nilai University (Nilai U) was held from Feb 6 to 8. First held in March 2017, the campaign garnered great response so the Nursing Department has since decided to organise the campaign annually.
The campaign’s main objective is to promote a healthy lifestyle, the benefits of which are numerous. These include better quality of life and reduction of risks for certain diseases.
Health awareness
Other objectives include creating health awareness among the Nilai U community and to provide opportunities for regular health screening which can pave the way to early detection of diseases.
Among the activities were the assessment of Body Mass Index, recording of vital signs, body fat analysis and glucose test which were done to give a general indication of a person’s health status.
Those with results that were of concern were advised to seek further consultation with a medical practitioner. In addition, free dental check-up and eye assessment services were also provided.
Active lifestyle
To promote an active lifestyle, the nursing students took the lead by organising an aerobic session. Information booths on foods and fruits were also set up to encourage healthy eating while a facial care booth was on hand to promote the need to maintain general well-being.
In addition to the support provided by Nilai U staff and students, the campaign was supported by event partners including Majlis Kanser Nasional, Pakar Kesihatan USIM Nilai, Malaysia Milk Sdn Bhd, Healthy Food, Shifaa Heal Pharmacy, Ajilah Vital Optometrist and INTAJ Spa.
Based on the success of this year’s campaign, the organising committee has already started the ball rolling for next year’s event.
The Nursing Department head, Olive Lopez said, “We already have several outreach programmes for the general community as part of our corporate social responsibility initiative. To enhance this outreach programme, we plan to expand the campaign to include residents around the Nilai township.”
