HELPING THE ELDERLY LIVE INDEPENDENTLY
Luxury retirement residence ensures care, safety and social interaction.
ACCORDING to the World Health Organisation, an estimated 646,000 fatal falls occur each year globally, making it the second leading cause of accidental death after road traffic accidents.
Age is one of the key risk factors in incidents of falls, where adults over 65 years old face the highest risk of death or serious injury from a fall and the risk increases with age.
The Asian culture here is such that family members of the elderly automatically take up the role of the caregiver, helping the latter to eat, bathe and get in and out of the bed or chair.
However, this has become increasingly difficult and challenging for many as they have to juggle work and care for their family on top of tending to the elderly.
This leads to the latter being left alone for longer periods of time, increasing their risk of falling and injury if they try to do things alone with no one keeping an eye on them.
Rei Seraya Residence, the first of its kind luxury retirement community in Malaysia, offers seniors a chance to live their desired lifestyle with the necessary level of assistance.
It is a senior living project that is jointly developed by a consortium made up of Pelaburan Hartanah Bhd, UEM Group Bhd and Medical Care Service Inc (MCS).
The residence is a well-thoughtout development, created by an Australian architect who specialises in senior living facilities.
It is designed with ergonomics and safety for the elderly and people with disabilities in order to have access to an environment without barriers.
Space is clutter-free to prevent tripping or bumping into objects; practicality, functionality and aesthetics are balanced so that the residents can achieve the best quality of life.
Other special design features include wider width at doorways and reduced height of switches for easier movement and to suit wheelchair-bound seniors respectively.
Apart from grab bars for support, benches dot the common area for residents to rest when feeling tired while vinyl flooring is used to reduce tripping, dust collection and provide comfort to the elderly’s feet.
The residence is equipped with advanced technology, using Internet of Things (IoT) monitoring system like the emergency call button connected to the primary caregiver, motion sensor and noise detector.
Both motion sensor and noise detectors capture movement and loud noises in the room respectively, and notifications will be sent to the caregiver if there is no motion or noise after a certain duration.
The unit key is also equipped with sensors which detects if the resident is in or out of the house, and together with the motion sensor, potential break-in to the house can be detected.
Rei Seraya is also all about community living where social interaction through a household concept design is always encouraged.
When senior citizens live alone or are ill or disabled, loneliness and social isolation becomes an inevitable problem and that can have serious effects on their health.
Being surrounded by a community of like-minded people promotes vital social connections and boosts one’s mood while keeping the mind sharp.
The residence offers many common facilities for plenty of social interaction via year-round events and fun activities including music-making, singing, games and exercise.
Rei Seraya Residence offers two different types of senior living units: Assisted Living and Independent Living. They will be operated by one of the leading senior living operators from Japan – MCS – with over 15 years of experience.
It offers personal and dedicated specialised services, physical as well as mental support, assists seniors in dealing with loss of autonomy while assuring the safety and well-being of each resident.
The 0.6ha development’s location along Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur (next to Gleneagles Hospital) will make it convenient for residents’ family members to visit them.
