TELEKOM Malaysia Bhd’s announcement that it will be rolling out a free upgrade to its high-speed broadband service, Unifi, is being received well.

The upgrade, which will be done in phases starting Aug 15, is set to increase the broadband speed up to 10x.

Web developer Kugantharan Vasanthakumar, 37, is happy with the move. Currently a Unifi Home 20Mbps subscriber, Kugantharan says that he looks forward for the speed to increase to up to 100Mbps in the near future.

“The speed bump helps especially when all of my family members are using Unifi concurrently. This means that we can stream Netflix better, and also generally get a more pleasant experience when surfing the Net,” he said.

Unifi Home 20Mbps (megabits per second) or lower subscribers will be upgraded up to 100Mbps, 30Mbps plan up to 300Mbps, 50Mbps plan up to 500Mbps, and 100Mbps up to 800Mbps.

“It’s good to see the country moving forward in this sector. We’re finally catching up with the rest of the world,” said Ivan Lim, 35, an event planner.

An avid gamer, Lay Jian Shen believes that the increase in the speed will definitely influence his gaming experience for the better.

“Firstly, the game won’t be laggy and I’ll be up to speed with the other players. In the past, the lag has affected my performance,” said the 19-year-old Fortnite player.

“The upgrade for our current customers will happen in phases starting this August and may go well into the first quarter of 2019,” said Unifi executive vice president Imri Mokhtar.

Those who subscribe to an existing Unifi Home plan by the end of the year will also enjoy the free upgrade starting from 2019.

TM acting group CEO Datuk Bazlan Osman also introduced a Unifi Basic plan that is exclusive for households with an income of RM4,500 or less.

Priced at RM79 a month, the 30Mbps broadband-only plan has a monthly data cap of 60GB.

“This offers only high speed Internet without voice or TV benefits. However, if the subscribers want the extra features, they can always add on,” said Bazlan.

There will be a verification process to determine if a household is eligible for the Unifi Basic plan, he added.

Unifi Basic is available exclusively online at unifi.com.my/unifi-basic starting Aug 15 but users can preorder it now.

Imri also revealed that about 340,000 Streamyx customers located in areas with Unifi coverage will be upgraded to the faster service. The free Streamyx upgrade will only be kick started next year and eligible users will be contacted by Unifi.

Users can check if they qualify for the upgrade at unifi.com.my.

TM is also reintroducing the unlimited Unifi Mobile postpaid plan that gives unlimited data, SMS and calls for RM99 a month and without contract. This offer is exclusive to its existing Unifi and Streamyx customers.
