CAPITAL TV officially changed its name to Channel W on July 9. The six-year old business TV channel (available on unifi TV Ch 634, with videos viewable on social media like YouTube.com and FB) has a brand new direction along with its brand new identity.

It now has the content application service license (individual), allowing the company to be a freeto-air public broadcaster alongside RTM and Media Prima.

Channel W is currently in talks to commence a trial broadcast on digital terrestrial television (DTT) platform via MYTV Broadcasting, tentatively by the end of July.

In a statement, Noor Azman Yusof the CEO of Channel W, said: “Evolution and change are inevitable in the media industry.

“Our society is faced with an information overload and it seeks nonpartisan source of information that it can rely on. The channel has to evolve to cater to that demand.”

He added: “The W in Channel W stands for warta which means news in Bahasa Melayu. The W also represents the 5Ws in journalism – who, what, where, when and why.”

Channel W has a number of informative shows – aired live on weekdays from 5pm to 11pm – which cover current events, lifestyle and entertainment.

Among them are Talking Point, Fokus Hari Ini, Relax@W and Wazzup!

Starting this month, the channel is airing series from Japan (Haunted Hospital) and Sweden (Grey Zone). Channel W is looking at working with local film producers to promote upcoming Malaysian films through its talk shows. It is also airing a programme featuring local nasyid group Raihan and its community social work activities.

Datuk Captain Ahmad Sufian, the chairman of Online Dynamics – the company that owns Channel W – said that they are looking at extending airtime to 24 hours.

He added that apart from entertainment shows, the channel hopes to air programmes that are aimed at educating and informing the public.
