Proton’s Middle East biz resumes
PROTON has resumed the export of its cars to Middle East with the first shipment flag-off from Westport here to Aqaba, Jordan.
The first shipment of 453 Proton cars consisting of left-hand drive versions of Gen 2 and Preve models will be loaded on board the Grand Diamond roll-on/roll-off cargo vessel before sailing to Jordan.
The cars will then be distributed to countries such as Egypt, Iraq and Iran.
This also marks the first export shipment for the national carmaker since partnering with Geely.
“This ceremony marks a starting point for Proton as we resume and ramp up shipments to the Middle East in the coming months,” said Proton deputy chief executive officer Datuk Radzaif Mohamed.
The last major export of Proton cars to the Middle East was in 2015.
Proton chief executive officer Li Chunrong said: “The Middle East markets hold high regard for products from Islamic countries like Malaysia. The demand for cars will grow as their economies develop and will help fuel the growth of our export business.”
Li said besides the Middle East, Proton is also looking towards Malaysia’s neighbours to export its cars.
“The Asean market will remain as the main priority for Proton’s export business so we are excited about the opportunities available in the region,” he said.
Westports chief executive officer Eddie Lee said, the port operator was excited to partner Proton in its efforts to ship cars around the world.
“We believe Westports’ partnership with our customers like Proton together with shipping agents like Sunship will further strengthen both brands, and help ensure cars sent over are in pristine condition,” he said.
Proton is also looking to export some 2,200 cars this year while expanding its left-hand drive lineup.
