The Toys That Made Us Season Two

- – Michael Cheang

IF you’re wondering what The Toys That Made Us is about, its annoyingly catchy theme song probably explains it best: “It’s an eight-part documentary series, about the toys that we all know. Plastic creations that last for generations and we still cannot let go!”

Yeah that about sums it up. The first four episodes released last year covered Star Wars, He-Man, GI Joe and Barbie, and episodes 5-8 were recently released on Netflix, and they cover Star Trek, Transformers, Lego and Hello Kitty.

But wait, Hello Kitty? Is that actually a toy line? And since when were the Star Trek toys an actual phenomenon outside of the Star Trek fandom?

Well, you could say that the series plays it loose when it comes to defining its subjects, though to be fair, the two episodes were actually pretty entertaining thanks to some creative editing, and interesting information (did you know that Hello Kitty began as a coin purse?).

The Hello Kitty episode even brings out celebrities like Kimora Lee Simmons and Paris Hilton to talk about their Hello Kitty obsession.

As a toy collector personally, the Transformers and Lego episodes were the ones I enjoyed most, and it was especially fun to see how those two brands evolved over the years.

Now, the question is, will there be more episodes beyond this eight-part documentary series? Because if there are, here’s hoping they’ll go back to featuring actual toy lines, and not just pop culture brands.

The Toys That Made Us Season Two is available on Netflix.
