- By SHARMILA NAIR bytz@thestar.com.my

At A glance, the Nova 3 and Nova 3i – the latest addition to the Huawei family – look identical. the newest midrange phones from the Chinese tech giant are the same size, sporting a 6.3in screen (1,080 x 2,340 pixels) with a notch and 19.5:9 aspect ratio.

the phones have dual front cameras – 24-megapixel sensor and 2-megapixel sensor. the primary sensor captures detail with its f/2.0 wide aperture lens and the secondary lens captures depth. together, the lenses are expected to produce better Bokeh effects.

the AI powered cameras can recognise over 200 scenarios – including Blue Sky, Plant and Beach – which allows the phone to optimise the camera settings for each scene so selfies look more beautiful. Also, the Nova 3i has 16-megapixel and 2-megapixel cameras on the back, whereas the Nova 3 has a more impressive set of shooters – 16-megapixel (RGB) and 24-megapixel (monochrome).

the rear cameras can reportedly distinguish more than 500 scenarios so even amateurs can take great photos.

Both phones allow users to record 480fps (frames per second) slow-motion videos, and support Qmoji – a feature that lets you map your face in 3D to create videos, which can be shared in GIF and MP4 formats. the Nova 3i runs on Kirin 710, the first phone to run on the newest chipset from Huawei, while the Nova 3 runs on a more powerful Kirin 970.

the Nova 3 has 6GB RAM and a 3,750mAh battery while the Nova 3i has 4GB RAM and a 3,340mAh battery. Both phones have 128GB of storage which is a lot of space for mid-range models.

Just like the Huawei P20 Pro, both the Nova 3 and Nova 3i come in a gradient colour, Iris Purple, where the colour shifts between blue and purple.

Priced at RM1,899, the Nova 3 also comes in Black and Red while the Nova 3i, priced at RM1,249, also comes in Black and Pearl White.

the Nova 3i will go on sale on July 28 while the Nova 3 will only be available on Aug 17.
