Zoom in on the moon

-

BIRD-watchers and star-gazers take note: Nikon has unveiled a new compact digital camera containing a lens that it says has the world’s highest zoom ratio in a compact camera.

Nikon’s Coolpix P1000 comes with a 125x optical zoom, the equivalent of 24-3,000mm, matching many astronomy telescopes.

the camera builds on the already-impressive features of its predecessor, the P900, and its 83x zoom lens, incorporating features like 4K video, built-in WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity.

A demo video released by Nikon shows the camera delivering extremely close shots of a lion and 4K footage of the moon’s craters floating past.

As the first of its kind for a compact digital camera, the Coolpix P1000 “raises the bar for superzoom cameras”, Nikon executive vice president Jay Vannatter said, announcing the launch.

Photographers who want to make the most of the P1000’s zoom can also use designated moon and bird-watching modes that automatically adjust settings for better results in long-distance shots of night skies or dense foliage.

Users can also activate the P1000’s camera features remotely with Nikon’s new ML-L7 Bluetooth connected remote control, an optional accessory for remotely accessing functions like video start and zoom control.

the Coolpix P1000 is expected to cost US$1,000 (RM4,000) when it goes on sale in September, while the ML-L7 Bluetooth remote will retail for US$50 (RM200) on its release this fall.
