Quality medical and dental studies

-

AFTER years of studying, exams, courses and clinical practicals in wards, medical students finally graduate with an MBBS or BDS.

All they want is to start working in a hospital, using their knowledge and passion to help the sick.

For Melaka-Manipal Medical College (MMMC) graduates, this is just the first step in their medical profession.

As learning is a lifelongprocess, progress in medical fields in the past decade or two have made professional versatility and agility imperative skills.

In a future where technology dictates, those skills that are distinctly human will be among the most valuable and need to be developed through postgraduate study.

Hence, MMMC organises workshops for USMLE, PLAB and various royal colleges at its campus in Melaka.

These are generally attended by doctors who are unable to enrol during their full-time postgraduate courses. These programmes allow them to develop their skills in specific areas of interest, and gain “industry” relevance.

Additional benefits of postgraduate qualifications include developing skills for career options and increased monetary rewards.

Since its establishment, more than 3,500 medical and 200 dental surgeons have joined the Malaysian and overseas international health systems.

Feedback from healthcare professionals on the quality of MMMC graduates has been positive.

MMMC was set up in 1994 and commenced with its flagship MBBS course in 1997.

In 2009, the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) had its first cohort, followed by the Foundation in Science (FIS) in 2012.

Twinning with the Indian institution, Manipal, the degree programmes required students to complete their preclinical studies in the Manipal, India, campus before returning to Malaysia to complete the clinical training.

The year-long FIS is completed entirely in the Melaka campus, aiming to stream students to its own MBBS and BDS programmes with the inclusion of medicine and dentistry modules in its curriculum.

Students with the MMMC FIS are able to apply to allied health science programmes in other institutions.

MMMC has also successfully integrated the Manipal ethos into the Malaysian curriculum, its faculty and its students. The facilities in both the Manipal and Melaka campuses provide a holistic education.

In Manipal, students are able to join clubs for music and fine arts, enjoy literary pursuits, meditation, yoga, debating, photography and language classes.

The campus also has playgrounds and courts for cricket, hockey, football, tennis, basketball, badminton and volleyball, as well as swimming pools, gyms and athletic tracks.

Ample facilities

The facilities in the Melaka campus include various teaching and learning facilities, auditoriums, lecture halls, classrooms, science labs, skill labs, library and computer labs.

There are also student hostels, cafeterias, gymnasium, swimming pool, sauna, squash courts, football field and basketball court.

Visit the Bukit Baru, Melaka campus and experience the calm, uninterrupted study ambience themselves.
