Wedding of the year

-

A HIGH society wedding at a nature park with 16-storey tall trees in Singapore? Well, only in Crazy Rich Asians.

The wedding of rich scion Colin Khoo (Chris Pang) and model Araminta Lee (Sonoya Mizuno) is a major event that takes place in the movie.

In the book, author Kevin Kwan describes the wedding as an event that caused “private jet-gridlock” at Changi Airport.

To put it simply, production designer Nelson Coates said you have never seen a wedding like this before.

“The wedding takes place in Chijmes (a 19th century building that has been converted into a restaurant, bar and event space in Singapore). Imagine an orchid garden in the church. There’s a moon gate and the setting is just magical with fireflies and butterflies,” he shared.

While the wedding happens at Chijmes, the shoot for the evening reception was set in the picturesque Gardens By The Bay.

Star2 was invited to tour the set of at Gardens By The Bay. A number of Chinese banquet-style tables were set around the park’s famed Supertrees. There were plates with what appears to be a selection of Nyonya kuih.

Production had to stop at some point to allow the park to run its regular Garden Rhapsody light show for visitors.

“They never allowed anything like this before. We couldn’t be celebrating Singapore without having Gardens By The Bay as one of the featured portions in the movie,” said Coates.

Expect to see a big choreographed dance performance with orchestra music and mini version of Supertrees as part of the extravagant wedding set up.

Oh, and look out for a scene shot at the iconic infinity swimming pool on top of Marina Bay Sands hotel.

“Something happens there that is more special than what was in the book,” Coates teased gleefully. –AY
