Embracing a holistic educationa­l approach

COMPRISING five first-year students in the Certificat­e in Finance, Accounting and Business programme (CFAB) of Sunway TES, Team GENS walked away with the top prize of RM8,000 cash at this year’s Nurture Business Challenge (NBC).

Held annually to encourage a more holistic educationa­l approach to accounting, a total of RM10,000 in cash prizes are offered to the top five finalists chosen to present at the NBC.

Participat­ing teams consist of first-year students in the CFAB and CAT (Certified Accounting Technician) programmes who have to present a business proposal to market a new product or service to achieve the targets.

This year’s top three finalists focused on solving a range of issues involving laundry, public toilets and a convenienc­e meal.

Team GENS impressed the six judges with their business idea for AIREX, an appliance that dries and steams laundry in one go.

Comprising Bin Sze Qing Tiffany, Vikky Beh Wei Chi, Muhammad Hasif Hafidzi, Chia Xin and Sangkharii Kalaithaso­n, GENS pitched a laundry appliance targeted at working mothers.

Using their 10-minute presentati­on time to outline their business plans and strategies for an initial launch of this unique product in the cities of Kuala Lumpur, Johor Baru and Penang, this team did their best to provide a technicall­y solid presentati­on to meet the criteria set by the six judges. The presenter, Beh, was named Best Speaker and received a certificat­e.

The panel of judges for this year’s NBC included Deloitte Corporate Finance and M&A Advisory partner Datuk Nizar Najib, Asean Diversity and Inclusiven­ess Leader, EY, Malaysia Talent Leader partner Lee Soon Fern, KPMG executive director – People, Performanc­e and Culture Monsy Siew, BDO advisory director Pam Lee, PWC associate director (Tax) Siti Aishah Ismail and Sunway iLabs director Matt van Leeuwen.

Team Cleaningfu­l which comprises Ngew Shwen Wern, Gwenlyn Loh, Tiew Wei Jia,

Ng Wai Lam and Chan Ping Xing, won the first runner-up prize of RM6,000 in cash with their presentati­on of KlenX. A clean, hygienic and convenient product, the automated toilet seat cleans itself within 30 seconds of use.

Proposing to launch their product on World Toilet Day, Cleaningfu­l, which comprises five first-year students from the CFAB programme, outlined a business-tobusiness approach to build their self-cleaning business during their presentati­on.

Team Smart Cup won the second runner-up prize in the Nurture Business Challenge. Taking the cash prize of RM4,000, the team members comprising Lee Tong Ying, Tan Thien Ye, Tan Yuan Yuan, Lim Fang Xian and Sriram S. Odaiyappan @ Thiagaraja­n used their presentati­on time to demonstrat­e cooking instant noodle in a cup with room temperatur­e water.

While waiting for their noodle to cook, these students in the CAT programme discussed their research, technology, strategies and pricing for their proposed product.

The other two finalists, teams Agrolizer from the CAT programme and Morph from the CFAB programme, took home a cash prize of RM1,000 each for their ideas of affordable commercial organic fertiliser­s and colour changing paint in the home.
