Aligning skills with advancing technology
FACULTY of Engineering and Computing at First City University College (First City UC) provides academic programmes in the area of engineering and computing.
Over the years, the faculty introduced programmes in the field of electronic engineering, mechatronics, mechanical engineering, information technology, information systems (business management), software engineering, computer science (intelligent systems), networking and security and mobile computing.
To provide students with good learning experience and skills development, the university college is fully equipped with advanced software tools and machinery in electronic system design, software development and mechanical engineering for the students’ practical learning exposure.
Examples include leading software in electronic design automation Mentor Graphics Integrated Circuit design tools, Siemens Solid Edge 3D modelling software, IBM DB2, rapid prototyping machine, and Computer Numerical Control (CNC).
With the rapid evolvement of technology, the Faculty of Engineering & Computing lecturers stay up-to-date with the current digital world to adopt modern teaching techniques to create an effective education platform between students and lecturers.
The teaching strategies and platforms include blended learning, gamification, face-to-face and e-learning portal.
The Faculty of Engineering and Computing lecturers also incorporate recent technology advancements into the programmes by introducing industry-relevant modules.
Students are equipped with skills required in the era of Industry Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0), where the age of robotics, Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing and Artificial intelligence (AI).
These emerging technologies are included in the curriculum of the programmes of study.
The lecturers also guide and train the students with multidisciplinary skills to handle and undertake real industrial project.
“In the engineering programmes of study, we have included a module called ‘Integrated Design Project’,” said Faculty of Engineering and Computing dean Assoc Prof Dr Christine Lee.
“It offers a distinctive opportunity for students to play a key role as part of a team working on a realistic design project. It is about creating and testing ideas to solve real-world problems.
“In doing so, students will improve their technical knowledge, communication, practical skills and employability at a stroke.”
First City UC also provides platforms for the students to connect with the potential employers and partners from the industry.
There have been occasions where students are offered job opportunities even before graduation.
Recently, a collaboration was inked with Iconix Consulting Sdn Bhd to promote training, talent developments as well as corporate responsibility (CR) events and activities to further nurture the students in engineering and computing.
First City UC, strategically located in an urban modern township in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, will be hosting Open Day throughout the weekends in August and September 2018, commencing Aug 18 onwards at 1 Utama Shopping Centre at Level 2, Oval, New Wing.
First City UC provides financial assistance in the form of scholarships and discounts.
