Nurturing competent and caring dietitians
THE IMU Dietetics with Nutrition degree was recently awarded the international education accreditation for dietitians from the International Confederation Dietetics Association (ICDA).
The Accreditation Commission of ICDA executive director, Prof Sandra Capra presented the award to IMU School of Health Sciences dean Prof Winnie Chee during the seventh Asian Congress of Dietetics in Hong Kong in July.
The ICDA is the largest worldwide body of dietetics professionals, and the IMU Dietetics with Nutrition Programme is the first programme in the world to receive this prestigious award.
“Accreditation means the programme of study meets an agreed international standard. Perhaps the most valuable aspect of the process is the self-evaluation and quality confirmation and avenues for improvement the process offers. Our goal is to help the profession,” said Prof Capra.
According to Prof Chee, who is also a professor of dietetics in IMU, “We are very proud to receive this accreditation, which is timely as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the IMU dietetics programme.
“Today, many young people are also looking to gain employment across the world and the ICDA accreditation provides an assurance to employers that the IMU Dietetics with Nutrition curriculum meets the educational standards, training and assessment needed to produce dietitians who promote and protect the health of the clients and communities they serve.”
The BSc (Hons) Dietetics with Nutrition degree is a four-year programme integrated with dietetics practicum in food service management, community dietetics and clinical dietetics as well as an opportunity to embark on a mobility experience for four weeks abroad or locally.
It also offers credit transfer options to bachelor’s degree in the University of Newcastle, Australia or a master’s degree in the University of Otago, New Zealand.
Graduates from the IMU programme can enter the workforce and begin their career as dietitians across a variety of clinical as well as non-clinical settings.
The commencement dates for the Dietetics with Nutrition programme are in July and September. If you have pre-university qualification and a strong background in science, good communication skills and have a caring personal attitude, apply now for a career that helps ensure your patients’ diets are on track. If you have just completed your SPM and do not have pre-university qualifications, enrol in the one-year IMU Foundation in Science (FiS), the direct route into any of the university’s degree programmes.
