Secret to aceing law
ADVANCE Tertiary College (ATC) student Hon Yee Neng knows how to get scores that land her at the top.
Currently among the top three in Malaysia for the University of London Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme, Hon shared what she learnt along the way – and how others can also be top achievers.
Hon started her A-Levels course in ATC and had not initially intended to stay as she had planned to go overseas.
However, she said the level of comfort while studying at ATC, plus the possibility of attaining a University of London degree made her decide to continue her course there. Furthermore, the college is known for producing good students.
For Hon, the difficult part of studying law was getting her answers to stand out from the rest of the students.
“At times, understanding concepts can be hard but trying to analyse it in a different light can be all the more challenging.”
Hon explained that students have to be passionate about law if they want to embark on the journey.
During exam periods, Hon would wake up at 8am and study all the way through till noon.
After taking a nap until 3pm, she would continue studying until night, a schedule that would usually continue on a daily basis for three months prior to examinations.
Due to the small class size in ATC, students have the opportunity to get close to the lecturers.
The lecturers would thus be able to gauge the students’ individual strengths and weaknesses and advise them accordingly.
What most people tend to look over, however, is that their support system needs to include themselves as well.
Good and dedicated lecturers
While ATC has good lecturers, students need the mental strength to eke out on their own and stay grounded, said Hon.
She pointed out that external students face only one exam a year and the urge to procrastinate can be difficult to ignore.
As the course is 100% exambased, it can get lonely at times without coursework and fellow classmates, for everyone is studying on their own.
Compared to most local universities, ATC has a small community of students and lecturers so most would feel at home.
Lecturers are focused as ATC specialises in law and business.
“If I had the choice to do it all over again, I wouldn’t choose any differently,” Hon concluded.
