Use technology wisely

-

WE are now in the 21st century, also known as the digital age. Technology is very much a part of our lives now. Each day, students are exposed to many electrical appliances such as computers, smart phones, remote control fans and electric trains.

Even though these electrical gadgets have many advantages, there are also disadvantages.

The television enables us to watch many enjoyable and educational programmes. But do not sit too close to the TV screen as it can spoil your eyes. Experts recommend sitting at least eight to 10 feet away from the TV screen.

Cars enable us to travel further, compared to walking or cycling.

But carbon monoxide released from cars can pollute the air. This can lead to global warming. Encourage friends and your parents to car pool or use public transportation.

The Internet is a good platform to get information. Students can get help for their assignments and watch shows for entertainment or to gain knowledge.

But, too much sedentary time on digital devices can impact our health. It can lead to obesity and sleep problems. Ensure you have a break from the computer for positive habits like reading, spending time with friends or exercising.

Social networking websites like Facebook and Instagram can be used as platforms to share ideas and make friends from all over the world. But be careful of the people you connect with online. Do not share your information freely with strangers.

There are positive and negative points about technology. Understand the benefits of technology and learn to use it wisely. – By Sandra Voon Hwee Xane, 11.
