Nutritious option for stronger bones and muscles

-

NUTRITIONAL status plays an important role in maintaining healthy skin and bones. Macronutrients (carbohydrate, protein and fat) work hand in hand with micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) to maintain the structural and mechanical functions of the body.

Changes in nutritional status, especially low protein intake, can alter the skin’s structure and function and directly affect its appearance.

Tissue degeneration as a result of low protein stores in the body leads to premature ageing. Some of the early signs of this include:

l Wrinkled and dull skin l Thinning hair or hair loss

l Brittle nails

l Puffy bags under the eyes l Swollen ankles, face and fingers l Lack of body strength

To maintain healthy and youthful skin, hair, nails and good body strength, it is important to ensure sufficient protein intake from one’s diet.

Essential amino acids

Protein is made from building blocks called amino acids. Good-quality protein contains all 20 amino acids, including the nine essential amino acids that our body cannot produce and must obtain from dietary sources.

When protein is consumed and digested, our body selects the required amino acids to construct new structural proteins such as collagen and elastin, which are found predominantly in the skin, bones and muscles. Amino acids are also used to generate new

skin cells to replace dead ones. A woman’s bone mass is at its peak around the age of 30 and will gradually decrease thereafter.

Most women experience rapid bone mass loss during menopause as a result of declining oestrogen levels, which greatly increases the risk of osteoporosis.

Although bone loss is inevitable with age, women can delay the process by taking sufficient nutrients for bone health such as calcium, magnesium, vitamin D3 and vitamin K2.

Several studies, such as a 2017 study titled The Synergistic Interplay between Vitamins D and K for Bone and Cardiovascular Health: A Narrative Review published in the International Journal of Endocrinology, have shown that a combination of calcium with magnesium, vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 significantly improved bone health.

Magnesium and vitamin D3 facilitate the absorption and utilisation of calcium while vitamin K2 helps improve bone density by effectively depositing calcium to bones and teeth for proper storage.

Hence, these nutrients work synergistically for effective calcium utilisation and metabolism.

According to the European Food Safety Authority, vitamin K2 (menaquinone, MK-7) is a highly bioavailable form of vitamin K that helps maintain healthy bones.
