Legal career awaits
THE common perception that a degree in law (LLB) is sufficient qualification for one to enter into the legal practice is misleading. Having an undergraduate degree in law is one of the requirements to enter the profession, but it is not the only criteria.
To enter into the legal profession in Malaysia, legal graduates must fulfil entry requirements as stipulated by the Legal Profession Qualifying Board (LPQB).
Accordingly, graduates with a recognised law degree from foreign universities in the UK, Australia or New Zealand must pass the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) examination before completing a ninemonth period of pupillage to be eventually admitted as an advocate and solicitor in Malaysia.
The CLP is a professional examination conducted yearly by the LPQB in July or August. Its focus is to ensure that only the best and highly qualified candidates are able to enter the legal fraternity.
Thus, Advance Tertiary College (ATC) has carefully structured its CLP programme to cater to the specific needs of students.
ATC’s CLP course is run yearly from September to April followed by intensive revision sessions prior to the examination.
It offers a balanced combination of lectures and tutorials with emphasis on effective and correct examination techniques through its interactive tutorial sessions and intensive revision programme.
ATC’s faculty is a dynamic mix of seasoned legal practitioners and academicians whose dedication and vast experience has contributed to the relatively high passing rates among its students over recent years.
Faculty members polish the aptitude and attitude of its students to face their examination confidently and also be industry-ready. ATC believes that it is never truly a fulfilling and successful endeavour if one merely studies for CLP without a shift in mindset.
It is essential to note that a student embarking on the CLP course needs to raise above his LLB mode of study and “experience” the practice. It is this transition in mindset that ATC seeks to emphasise in its CLP programme.
Throughout the academic year, students on the CLP course are encouraged to broaden their skill sets and familiarise themselves with the legal practice by participating in the internal moot competitions, occasionally visiting courts and related agencies and attending public lectures or talks relevant to their legal studies.
Registration for the CLP programme in both ATC’s Kuala Lumpur and Penang campuses is currently in progress.
