Eat more greens and fruits

-

SEPTEMBER is Fruits and Veggies – More Matters month.

Why do you think your parents are always nagging at you to eat your fruits and vegetables?

It’s because they keep you healthy, and give you nutrients, vitamins and minerals to fight off diseases.

Our Starchild readers tell us about their favourite fruits and vegetables.

“Apples are my favourite fruits. My mother always says, ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’. My favourite vegetables are carrots because they are good for my eyes,” writes Naashendran Mahendran, seven.

“Cherries, strawberries and oranges are my favourite fruits. As for vegetables, I like lady fingers and carrots,” says Yap Shin Ee, seven.

“Broccoli can be cooked in many different ways and cabbage makes a good side dish for many meals,” says Rayna Kam Shin Rui, eight.

Ten-year-old Chang Zhi En associates fruits and vegetables with fun outings. “When the weather is good, my parents take me to the night market during the weekends to get fruits and veggies and I enjoy this very much.”

Anna Ruth Oh Hui Hann, seven, writes: “Cherries are stone fruits and are related to plums, peaches and nectarines. The mangosteen is known as the ‘queen of tropical fruits’. Interestingly, apple trees are members of the rose family.”

“Mummy always tells us to eat more fruits and vegetables, so we can be healthier. I love the strong taste of garlic, especially when served with Korean barbecue. I also love eating apples because of its sweet juice,” says Oliver Tham King Shawn, seven.

Olivia Tham Lee Wee , 11, is interested in the nutritional facts of her favourite fruits and veggies. “Carrots are rich in vitamin A. Watermelons, on the other hand, are rich in vitamin A and C, and always keep you hydrated.”

“I actually enjoy hearing the popping sound when you bite the kiwi fruit seeds. The kiwi fruit is quite tasty and healthy as well,” said Dora Chang , 10.

Sukhsehaj Kaur, eight, says, “I love eating grapes. They come in different colours which are red, green, dark blue and so on. Grapes are also a type of berries!”

“Red and yellow are my favourite colours and because of that I like red cherries, watermelons and pineapples,” says Bernard Jude Andrew David, seven.

Nine-year-old Gideon Immanuel Andrew David encourages everyone to eat fruits and veggies because of their health benefits. “The carrots and tomatoes which I enjoy eating are not just tasty but are also good for the eyes and the skin.”
