A common myth about dementia is that it is a natural part of ageing. But Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia isn’t normal; it is a disease of the brain that can cause significan­t memory loss. . We all forget details of conversati­ons or events . But someone with Azlheimer’s will forget what was just said or something that just happened. They will repeat things and may forget your name one day and remember it the next.

Difficulty communicat­ing

As dementia progresses, language and communicat­ions skills tend to diminish. Finding the right word may be problemati­c so patients may call things by the wrong name. Patients may forget what they want to say mid-sentence.

Agitation and mood swings

It is common for someone with Alzheimer’s to be anxious or agitated.

This usually stems from fear, confusion, fatigue and feeling overwhelme­d by trying to make sense of a world that no longer makes sense. They may also have extreme mood swings.

Difficulty with familiar task

A person with dementia often takes longer to complete and may have trouble finishing everyday tasks that he or she may have done hundreds of times before.

Impaired judgement

A person with Alzheimer’s may make decisions that seem silly, irresponsi­ble or even inappropri­ate - behaviour that’s different from their norm.

Confusion with time or place

Disorienta­tion such as fogetting where they live, getting easily lost, losing track of dates and time are all common.

Misplacing things

People living with Alzheimer’s might leave things in unusual places and then accuse people of hiding or stealing their belongings.

Wandering

About 60% of people with dementia have a tendency to walk off. wander aimlessly and become lost. This is caused by restlessne­ss, fear and confusion about time, inability to recognise faces and places as well as stress.
