Demi Lovato is ‘doing really well’, says mum

DEMI Lovato’s mother says the pop star is doing well nearly two months after she suffered an overdose, but she admits there was a time they weren’t sure whether Lovato would make it.

Dianna De La Garza says Lovato was in critical condition for several days after being hospitalised in July, and though she attempted to stay strong for the rest of her family, she was “very concerned” about her daughter.

“We just didn’t know for two days if she was going to make it or not,” De La Garza said.

De La Garza also reflected on the moment she learned her daughter had been hospitalised. She initially sent a string of text messages asking if Lovato was OK, before she had even heard the news herself.

Lovato’s assistant Kelsey then called De La Garza and told her what happened, leaving the mother in shock.

“I said, ‘Is she OK?’ And (Kelsey) stopped for a second and she said, ‘She’s conscious, but she’s not talking.’ I knew at that point that we were in trouble,” De La Garza said.

De La Garza and her other two daughters made it to the hospital shortly after, and the mum says Lovato “didn’t look good at all”.

“She was in bad shape, but I said to her, ‘Demi, I’m here. I love you.’ At that point, she said back to me, ‘I love you too.’ From that point on, I never allowed myself to ever think that things weren’t going to be OK,” she said.

Lovato, who spent over a week in the hospital, went to rehab after her release.

Her mother says she believes the “millions of prayers” people made for Lovato and the work of her doctors are what saved the 26-year-old singer’s life.

“I can honestly say today that she is doing really well,” De La Garza said. “She’s happy, she’s healthy, she’s working on her sobriety, and she’s getting the help she needs.” – New York Daily News/ Tribune News Service
