An excellent career in database management

“As a senior database engineer at a global e-commerce company, I manage a worldwide database. I also conduct analysis and feasibility studies on database migration,” says MSU alumnus Prabakar Manogaran.
The senior database engineer (Oracle) at leading Japanase company Rakuten Inc rose to the position from a prior junior one at Beans Group Sdn Bhd. He started his database management career at Dell Malaysia in June 2012 and progressed to senior Oracle database administrator at British Telecom in September 2015.
Penang-born Prabakar traces his successful career in database management to a specialisation in software engineering and a Bachelor in Computer Science with Honours from MSU.
“My MSU education built my character and equipped me well for the industry,” he recalled of his undergraduate years.
“I participated in all the soft skills enrichment programmes and co-curricular activities to develop my leadership and communication skills. These now help me perform my duties well alongside people from various cultures and personal backgrounds.”
Thanking his dedicated lecturers for their part in his success, the member of MSU’s Class of 2011 alumni also advises jobseekers to not be too choosy when just starting out.
While he feels that the MSU ecosystem supported him significantly, he also opines that one should maximise one’s ventures, “Take whatever opportunity comes your way, learn from the experience, expand on it and keep building your credentials.”
Technical vocational education and training (TVET) is embedded across all academic programmes at MSU, resulting in the university’s recognition by the UK’s Accreditation Service for International Schools, Colleges and Universities (ASIC) as a Global TVET Model University. MSU is also a Validated Award Centre for Academic Skills International Qualifications (ASIQUAL) providing ASIQUAL validated programmes.
