Never give up
SIMU Liu, who recently shot to fame through Canadian comedy Kim’s Convenience, reveals he attended multiple audition sessions for Crazy Rich Asians. “I auditioned for (Crazy Rich Asians) about four times, so I think there was some definite interest,” the China-born, Canadian actor tells Digital Spy. He auditioned for leading man Nick Young, Nick’s best friend Colin and Astrid’s husband Michael. “But at the end of the day, when I watched the characters on screen, I understand where they went with it. A lot of the characters have an older feel, I read a little bit younger at the time.” The 29-year-old actor isn’t giving up just yet. He is looking forward to audition for the role of Carlton, Rachel Chu’s half-brother, in the film’s (unconfirmed) sequel. “What’s really interesting to me about Carlton is that he’s a bit younger and he’s got a bit of a wild streak to him.” As for now, viewers can watch Liu on Kim’s Convenience, a comedy series about a Korean-Canadian family running a convenience store in Toronto. Liu plays son Jung, who has an estranged relationship with dad, Appa, because of a mistake he made in his youth. He tells TV, eh? website: “There is always something peppered in about the past between Appa and Jung. Whether they get to that reconciliation, I can’t say for sure, but there is definitely movement on that front.”
Seasons One and Two of Kim’s Convenience are available on Netflix.
