Keep track of them

-

TODAY, many eye beauty trends have emerged to give people the eyes they have always wanted. Deep and dark or large and bright, you name it. Alluring as these trendy eyes are, there a few things to keep in mind to ensure they do not affect eye health.

Coloured contacts

Pick your colour, pop them in and you have a new look in seconds. Fashion contacts can be easily bought from accessory and costume stores, but are they safe?

Contacts are not like make-up or clothing. While make-up and clothes are worn on the skin, contacts are placed in the eye for at least 12 hours. Serious infections can result from cheap contacts made of low-grade material. The lens of your eye may be scratched from an ill-fitting contact, which could lead to blindness.

The Association of Malaysian Optometrists says that when it comes to lenses, the professional advice of an optometrist is essential as your eyes are delicate features. Beauty may be important, but health and safety are paramount.

Eyebrow embroidery

Also known as microblading, this technique uses very small blades to scrape ink over the eyebrow in the desired shape. The effect is naturallooking but semi-permanent eyebrows that last between one and three years.

Eyebrows should only be embroidered by qualified and licensed beauticians. Going to a salon that is unregistered and employs inexperienced beauticians may make you susceptible to complications.

Because of the skin breakage involved, infections, including those of blood-borne viruses such as HIV, are possible at the hands of untrained individuals.

Before setting an appointment, ensure the salon of choice is licensed. Hygiene of the premises and equipment is essential when doing any beauty procedures.

Eyelash extensions

Why use mascara when you can have natural-looking extensions? These long, lush lashes come in a range of styles, materials and prices. Although the lashes themselves are harmless to the wearer, there is the possibility of an allergic reaction to the glue. During the procedure, make sure to speak up if you feel any burning or itching sensation.

Before getting your new lashes, keep in mind that these beauty additions require high maintenance. You cannot get them wet within the first 24 hours and mascara is a no-no. Often, as the lashes start to fall off, you may pull out your natural lashes trying to get them off, resulting in a reduced length of your natural lashes.

As with all beauty procedures, be sure that your stylist is qualified. It is great to have the beautiful eyes you’ve always dreamt of, but not if it compromises your health.
