About Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

- By SHIVAANI ARUMUGAM

RESEARCH shows that, for the first time in human history, the number of overweight people rivals the number of underweight people, based on data from the Worldwatch Institute.

Obesity is common among Gen Y due to multiple factors, for example, fast food, diseases, genetics, etc.

I was recently diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a common condition among women in my generation due to either imbalanced diets or genetics. It is a new experience for me.

This condition causes an individual to have menstrual irregularities, excessive amounts of androgen, and become obese.

Treatment comes in the form of hormone pills or insulin. My doctors prescribed hormone pills to regulate my cycle.

Regular exercise, the prescribed treatment and a balanced diet would help one to overcome PCOS.

I’ve been gaining weight and finding it very difficult to lose it. Many people have pointed out and criticised me about the changes in my skin tone, the acne, dry skin, boils (that have made a slight change to my skin texture) and, most of all, my weight.

Lately, my weight gain has been the talk of my circle, as the news passed through the grapevine. I really doubt their opinions, though, for there is not a spark of decency in them, so they should be taken with a grain of salt.

Obesity is not something to be shy or embarrassed about, unless someone degrades you, and such a person should never be given the opportunity to do so.

I always assure myself that soon all this will be over, and only the thoughts would be left to remind me of what I’m going through now.
