A glimpse into Latin America
WANT to catch a movie for free at the Latin American FIlm Festival (LAFF)? Present this page at the LAFF redemption counter at Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) in Pavilion KL to get tickets for film screenings from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.
Tickets are only available one hour prior to the movie screening time, on a first-come, first-served basis. Two tickets will be given out to each person.
Organised by the Embassies of the Latin American and Caribbean Group (GRULAC) in Kuala Lumpur, the 17th edition of the LAFF runs from Nov 8 to 11 at GSC Pavilion KL.
“Cinema is a great opportunity to show a sample of the remarkable diversity and variety of Latin American cultural expressions,” says Carlos Martins Ceglia, ambassador of Brazil to Malaysia.
“Together with other events, such as the 10th Latin American Festival held in Kuala Lumpur in September, we hope LAFF will make Malaysians feel a little closer to Latin America and even be enticed to visit our countries.”
This year’s film selection offers a wide range of genres, topics and styles ranging from comedy, romance, drama, documentary, thriller and animation.
Among the films are Selkirk, The Real Robinson Crusoe, a charming stop-animation story from Uruguay, of an unruly, self-centred pirate in search of treasure. When his captain decides to dump him on an island and sail off, he must learn to survive alone in the wilderness, a la Robinson Crusoe.
Another highlight is Ecuador’s Distant Closeness (Distante Cercania), a comedy that follows bank worker Bernardo, who lives under the insufferable shadow of his sick mother, even as he pines for the lovely Pepita, the most beautiful nurse in the city.
And if short films are your cup of tea, then check out Wild Tales (Relatos Salvajes), a 2014 Argentine-Spanish black comedy anthology comprising of six standalone shorts.
United by a common theme of violence and vengeance, they are all written and directed by Argentine film director Damian Szifron.
Guest country India will be participating in this year’s festival as well.
All LAFF movies will be screened with English subtitles. For showtimes and more information, visit www.gsc.com.my or www.facebook.com/LatinAmerican Film Festival In Malaysia.
