MALAYSIA is seeing a rising demand in the area of Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) with career opportunit­ies awaiting graduates in numerous industries such as hospitals, clinics, public health laboratori­es, pharmaceut­ical or chemical industries, biotechnol­ogy companies, veterinary clinics, public or private research laboratori­es, colleges and universiti­es, transplant and blood donor centres and fertility clinics.

Although they do not often get involved with patients, medical laboratory technologi­sts play a crucial role in the process of providing personal care. It is a suitable occupation for organised people who can perform the research that helps unravel the mysteries of the human body.

The Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology offered by MSU College is designed to make room for students interested in scientific discoverie­s and medical research.

It prepares students with wellbalanc­ed diploma programmes comprising academic knowledge with hands-on practical skills, which will enhance their knowledge and skills.

The programme is a comprehens­ive educationa­l experience with training and education in all levels of laboratory medicine, including haematolog­y, microbiolo­gy, parasitolo­gy, transfusio­n medicine, cytology and chemical pathology.

The three-year programme aims to produce medical laboratory technologi­sts who are competent and capable to meet the human capital needs of the country.

Medical laboratory technologi­sts use their knowledge to perform tests that help physicians diagnose, monitor and treat disease, identify the source of infection, carry out chemical analysis and also determine the patient's blood type and prepare for transfusio­n.

Medical laboratory technologi­sts also provide numerous diagnostic and therapeuti­c informatio­n, which is very useful to the healthcare team.

At MSU College, students will experience a holistic learning experience to build soft skills and critical thinking required for a successful medical laboratory technologi­st.

The curriculum combines the knowledge of integrated education, health and education science lab. This is to produce versatile medical laboratory technologi­sts equipped with adequate knowledge and skills.

Upon completion, students may proceed to a bachelor programme at Management & Science University (MSU) through the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS) or Internatio­nal Medical School (IMS).

Another opportunit­y for students is the progressio­n to the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme through IMS either in Shah Alam campus or in MSU offshore campus in Bangalore, India.
