A brief history of Captain Marvel

-

Carol Danvers was created by writer n Roy Thomas and artist Gene Colan 50 years ago in March 1968’s Marvel Super-Heroes #13, where she met Dr Walter Lawson, the human alter-ego of the Kree warrior Mar-Vell, the first Captain Marvel.

Her full name is Carol Susan Jane n Danvers and she was first introduced as an officer in the US Air Force, and later, head of security for Nasa.

In Captain Marvel #18 (1969), she is n kidnapped by an alien named Yon-Rogg, and during his battle with Mar-Vell, a Kree Psyche-Magnitron (a Kree device that gives humanoids superhuman powers) explodes and she is exposed to its effects.

It was originally thought that her n genetic structure was altered by the explosion, turning her into a Kree/human hybrid, but it has now been established that she already had Kree blood in her thanks to her mother.

Carol first made her superhero debut n in January 1977 as the first incarnation of Ms Marvel in Ms. Marvel #1. The Psyche-Magnitron’s alterations had been causing Carol to black out and become a Kree warrior complete with a superhero costume. After fighting the Scorpion, she then adopts the name “Ms Marvel”, since her costume ties her to Captain Marvel.

At the same time, she also joined the n Daily Bugle as editor of its women’s magazine

where she was already fighting for women’s rights and locking horns with J. Jonah Jameson himself over her salary.

She first joins the Avengers in 1979’s n

Avengers #183, and stayed on until the terrible The Child Is Father To...? story in 1980’s Avengers #200, in which she somehow gets pregnant and gives birth to a baby boy within a few days!

During a space mission with the n X-Men, Carol was abducted by the Brood, subjected to an evolutionary ray and is later is transformed into a powerful cosmic entity called Binary.

Carol eventually returns to the Ms n Marvel persona and plays major parts in the House Of M (2005), Civil War (2006) and Secret Invasion (2008) events, establishing herself as one of Marvel’s more prominent female superheroes.

As Captain Marvel, she is a member of n the main Avengers team and has also joined the Guardians of the Galaxy, became a mentor to the new Ms Marvel, Kamala Khan, and also commanded the Alpha Flight station as Earth’s first line of defence against cosmic threats.

She initially sided with Tony Stark in n favouring the Superhuman Registration Act in the original Civil War in 2006, but 10 years later, she clashed with Tony over the use of the future-predicting powers of the Inhuman Ulysses, and triggers the Civil War II event.
