Financial aid for students
Having been established for almost 50 years, Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) still stands by its mission and vision to provide education that is not only topnotch, but also affordable to all Malaysians.
In line with this principle, TAR UC provides financial assistance to deserving but underprivileged students so that they are able to pursue quality higher education. Such assistance is made available in the form of interest-free study loans, sibling discounts and scholarships/grants.
The main financial assistance provided by TAR UC is the student loans. The need-based TAR UC Student Loans consist of 35 TAR UC Student Loan Funds set up by philanthropic organisations, corporations, alumni and individuals to provide interest-free revolving loans in order to support needy students.
Since TAR UC Student Loans’ inception in 1979, more than 12,000 students have benefited with over RM32 million disbursed.
In recent years, TAR UC has also offered the sibling discount as a form of additional financial support to parents with two or more children studying at TAR UC. Under the sibling discount, newly registered students with a sibling(s) who is a full-fee paying student in the same semester are eligible for a discount of RM1,000 off their first semester tuition fee.
There are also the scholarships/bursaries administered by TAR UC in partnership with external organisations/alumni associations. These include The STAR Education Fund, Sin Chew Daily Education Fund, Nanyang Tertiary Education Fund, TAR UC – TAA Scholarship, TAR UC-TAA Scholarship (Top Glove) and TAR UC – Jinbodhi Bursary.
Two TAR UC students, Hemavanan Krishna Kumar and Nicholas Ho Yi Ming, expressed their gratitude for the financial assistance they received from TAR UC.
“I feel so grateful to be a recipient of the TAR UC – Jinbodhi Bursary as it has helped my family a lot and allowed me to continue my studies,” said Hemavanan.
The Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Logistics and Supply Chain Management student said the bursary enabled him to continue his studies after completing his self-funded foundation programme, whereby he had to take on part-time jobs to finance his studies.
“By receiving this bursary, I am able to focus on my studies and participate in extra-curricular activities,” he said.
“Believe in yourself and give yourself a chance” is the mantra that Ho, a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Electrical and Electronics student, holds close to his heart. This belief eventually landed him the scholarship.
“I wanted to ease my family’s financial burden, so I took a shot at this scholarship. Now I can set my sights on my goals and move forward, thanks to TAR UC-TAA,” he said.
